October 10 We distributed over 100 appointments for the Mexican Consulate visit…a total of over 300 appointments!! October 11 Tutoring program at South Medford High School and Citizenship classes at the office…the tutoring is very successful!! October 12 Parents are preparing for the District wide meetings where they will be presenting to other parents..October 13 Support group for Families with Children with Special Needs…first meeting for this school year and it was a HIT!!..October 14 collapsed exhausted in the office-hahhah….and gave out tomatoes from our garden…October 15 Occupy Medford… America is waking up!!!

Parent Meetings for Latino Student Success

Unete, in collaboration with the Latino Advisory Committee is sponsoring three parent meetings, directed at increasing parental involvement in their children’s education.

The gatherings are scheduled for October 19 at South Medford High School, 6:00pm, October 26 Jackson Elementary School at 5:30pm and November 2, at Hedrick Middle School at 6:00pm.

These parent led meetings will solicit input from parents about how to improve educational outcomes for our youth and focus on the importance of asking questions and being a part of their child’s educational success.

School district administration is supportive and excited to be part of this effort. Its a win-win for everyone. Stronger, better educated youth = A stronger community

Community Garden Feeding the Community

Thanks to a grant from the Ashland Food Coop Unete’s community garden is providing healthy foods for our Latino Community and also teaching Latino youth important agriculture skills passed down from generations of farmers.

“Its always fun to watch children discover the earth through gardening, tasting the fresh tomatoes straight off the vine,” says Dagoberto Morales. “Many of us, as children, spent hours in the fields with our parents growing food for our family and also to sell.

“We lived off the earth and we were taught to respect it and be thankful for what it provided for us. We want to pass this tradition down to our children here, far from our homeland.”

Unete’s Community Garden is sharing the bounty. We have already harvested over 500 pounds of tomatoes and chiles and the plants are still heavy with ripening fruit. The tasty veggies have been distributed througout the community, providing a much needed relief from rising food costs.

As Achievement Gap widens, Parents Step Up.

Voces Unidas Parent Group is actively working to improve their children’s educations. Last August 29th the group addressed the Medford 549C School Board and expressed their needs and concerns about the education of Latino youth.

Clad in white , group members took the podium and one by one, in Spanish, cited language, safety and academic achievement concerns, and let the Board and Superintendent know that it was time to step up and support the education of Latino youth.

“According to the statistics on the Oregon Department of Education website it appears that the achievement gap is widening in Medford and we are very concerned about that”, stated Leo A., one of Voces Unidas members. “We are here to work with the schools to improve our student’s outcomes and get more parents involved.”

Schedule Mexican Consulate Appointments Starting October 2

The Mexican Consulate will be returning to Medford in late October to process Passports and Matriculas Consulares for Mexican Nationals residing in Oregon. Unete will begin scheduling appointments for the upcoming visit of the Mexican Consulate on October 2, 2011 at 3:00pm at our office located at 27 N Ivy St in Medford. We will also be making a limited number of appointments by phone. Please bring photo ID with you when you come to schedule your appointment.
